Vinyl siding has come a long way. Here's what makes vinyl a solid pick:

• Wide color and style selection — dozens of colors and profiles available, including options that closely resemble wood without the maintenance.
• Low maintenance — never needs painting. An occasional rinse keeps it looking clean.
• Lowest up-front cost of the three options, and individual panels are easy to repair.
• Lightweight and fast to install — straightforward installation with no silica dust hazards.

The trade-off: vinyl can crack in a severe hail hit or a hard freeze, and it doesn't add the structural toughness that LP does. But for homeowners who want a sharp-looking exterior at a budget-friendly price, vinyl is a very good choice.

#3 — Hardie Board / Fiber Cement (well-known, but not our first recommendation here)

James Hardie / HardiePlank fiber cement is a widely recognized product with a solid reputation — it won't rot, won't burn, and holds paint well. We install it, and it's a legitimate product. But for Weatherford and Parker County homeowners, it ranks third on our list, and here's why:

• Heavy and brittle — fiber cement can crack or chip on hard hail impact, where LP SmartSide flexes and survives. In hail-prone North Texas, that matters.
• Silica dust hazard — cutting Hardie releases silica dust that requires full respiratory precautions. It's an extra safety step LP simply doesn't have.
